I love big family get-togethers! Whether it is a holiday, reunion, or just a time when we can all gather round the dining table there is nothing as hearty and nostalgic as a big pan of creamy scalloped potatoes. I usually have to make extra because we love them as left-overs!

The fact that you can make a huge dish is a relief because this is one our kids’ favorite way to fix potatoes and when you can buy a big bag of spuds fairly cheap, this also is budget friendly.

While scalloped potato dishes are not super fancy, there are a few basics that can set them apart from being boring to brilliantly prepared even for those just getting started in the kitchen.

This classic side dish that has been a standard next to honey glazed hams for as long as I can remember. Adding garlic and several varieties of cheese make this a perfect side dish for any occasion.

      My mom always had a layer of cheese in hers.. I loved the faint flavor of cheddar, but that could just be the way she made it when I was growing up. If she had some left over ham..she would dice that up and put it in as well.
